Carolyn Holcroft
43:42
Me too Jenne - none of the above
Laurie Scolari

drlisaeshman
44:03
What Lene said—erase my answer
Sara Cooper
44:22
I vote for lene’s answer!
Eric Reed
44:23
I chose the second one, but I would take out “self-paced.” I think that might send a different message than intended
Kathy Perino
44:26
“Self paced” makes me nervous

Patrick Morriss
45:13
spring break is for students
Fatima Jinnah
45:17
I agree with Jennifer. Virtual instruction is very different than the options provided in the poll
chemeneses
45:30
I like Lené’s suggestion add would add ‘accountability’ on both the teacher
chemeneses
45:36
And students end
Amber La Piana
45:40
Also like Lené’s response!
carolyn brown
45:50
virtual is a different concept
Leticia Serna
45:59
Lene…I agree “How about: Flexible delivery based on discipline, student, faculty and technology needs and resources?”
Fatima Jinnah
46:13
Lene’s answer!
Julie Brown
46:54
Will they deliver APO and FPO addresses?
carolyn brown
47:06
virtually=everything
Lené Whitley-Putz
47:07
Oh!! Great improvement, Carolyn! teaching and learning is so much better than delivery (delivery sounds like banking model!)
erinortiz
47:21
Romey is such a rock star!!!!!
Carolyn Holcroft
47:22
LOVE Lené’s suggestion. One tweak - how about: Flexible delivery based on discipline, student, faculty and technology needs and resources?
Scott Olsen
47:22

I put in my book order BEFORE I found out that Cengage was offering free online access due to Covid 19.

Carolyn Holcroft
47:49
WAIT! Mis-type! Sorry! I meant How about: Flexible teaching and learning based on discipline, student, faculty and technology needs and resources?
Katie Ha
48:02
I like that, @scott
Valerie Fong
48:37
@Kathy: Be sure to check any limits on the Cengage free access. Librarians will talk about this. Publisher free access may end at end of May.
Arcela Figueroa
48:45
How the Students that are in the College Promise can get their books?
Mike Mohebbi
48:59
@everyone, who is the point of contact for flex week programing/workshops?I have a lead that could run an online/zoom workshop for staff/faculty/students, or a "how to zoom interview" workshop for students
Lené Whitley-Putz
49:17
@scott—very intriguing, but is asynchronous always “recorded”?
Jerry Robredo
49:24
I have one.
Valerie Fong
49:27
@Arcela: Romy will talk about this, but they can use credit when ordering online at FH bookstore.
Lené Whitley-Putz
50:02
@mike, Carolyn Holcroft and I are the contact for Flex
Arcela Figueroa
50:09
Thank you Valerie
Thuy Nguyen
50:14
Eric, your son is adorable!
Sara Cooper
50:17
If we change our textbook adoptions to accommodate the situation, how can we change the adoption information that students see on the bookstore website?
Kevin Harral
50:24
@Aracela: The Financial Aid Office has been sending a list of FH Promise students to the Bookstore and when the student orders online they can get that benefit.
Mike Mohebbi
50:29
got it, thank you!
Jennifer Sinclair
50:33
@Carolyn - I like that update!

All faculty who are using Cengage Learning titles were e-mailed yesterday, with the instruction from Cengage
penningtonsimon@fhda.edu
52:15
@ Carolyn: This works. We will need to see if it resonates with students. I can do that today. Flexible teaching and learning based on discipline, student, faculty and technology needs and resources?

53:14
Yes, agree—the library team has been amazing
Debbie Lee
53:37
@Micaela — your kids are so cute!
penningtonsimon@fhda.edu
53:40
@Debbie: The poll options are not definitive. I sense the second option will be most popular, but Lene/Carolyn’s suggestion is a nice option.
Jennifer Sinclair
54:01
Poll is broken, because it forces a single choice, You can't even submit it blank.

Students will need to select the "Pay with SFA (Student Financial Aid)" option. When asked for their SFA account number, they should enter their student ID#.
Valerie Fong
59:52
Thank you, Romy!!
Micaela Agyare
01:00:48
Thank you Romy and Paul Sz. Please be safe handling all the books!
Kevin Harral
01:00:59
@Kerry - thanks for the clarification.
Lené Whitley-Putz
01:01:09
Such a good point, Thuy! We do need to think about how the language resonates with students!
Hilary Gomes
01:01:12
I don’t think Asynchronous is self pace
Fatima Jinnah
01:01:45
@hilary - agreed. Asynchronous is not self paced
Jordan C Fong
01:01:49
@hilary i also agree
carolyn brown
01:01:55
students are using the words asynchronous and synchronous. do they know what it means?
Hilary Gomes
01:02:01
I think this poll is problematic
Jordan C Fong
01:02:08
asynchronous doesn’t really equal self-paced
carolyn brown
01:02:20
what is self-paced?
Fatima Jinnah
01:02:41
To me, self-paced means you can do things on your own time. So, if a class has deadlines, is it self paced?
Lené Whitley-Putz
01:02:41
The poll instigated a great discussion…
Mary Vanatta
01:02:50
I feel like “self-paced” has been a term in Higher Ed for decades. Going back to learning by mail, etc.
carolyn brown
01:02:50
it can be self scheduled with due dates.
Katie Ha
01:02:51
WGU also uses “self-paced”
Brian Evans
01:03:10
I agree with Fatima... self-paced is unclear
Scott Olsen
01:03:12
Synchronized swimming vs open pool hours?
Rick Edwards
01:03:19
:)
Lené Whitley-Putz
01:03:21
It’s a great heuristic for examining some of our own assumptions
Jordan C Fong
01:03:22
yes, be careful with “self-paced” as it could imply that students can submit/complete assignments whenever they want
maureenmacdougall
01:03:35
I just say we are meeting via zoom at a certain time twice a week live. Zoom is also recorded. I do not use confusing new words for those who are not familiar. Everyone is already overwhelmed
carolyn brown
01:03:41
I’m getting request for synchronous in classes that are traditionally asynchronous. which requires course redesign
Hilary Gomes
01:03:43
I’ve been receiving students asking when my classes will be schedule for fully online courses. I think we should not tell students to contact us if we have a fully online courses on the schedule
Kathryn Maurer
01:03:45
Here’s the language I provided to students in my welcome letter: This course will be an “asynchronous” online course, that will be available to you in Canvas (Foothill College’s online course management system). This means that there are no meetings required and you can “attend” class (enter the Canvas site and complete work) at any time (24/7). The lectures (modules), assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. will all be online, and you can complete your work on your own schedule, as long as you meet the attendance requirements and the assignment due dates. You should still plan on dedicating the same amount of time to this class as you would to a 4-unit face-to-face class: four hours of instruction each week plus an average of 6-8 hours of homework (e.g. reading, completing assignments) each week. Please make sure you block off the appropriate amount of time (approximately 10-12 hours) each week to dedicate to this class.
Alexis Aguilar
01:03:45
Self-paced means students go at their own pace.
Carolyn Holcroft
01:03:59
Self-paced may accidentally suggest to the student that the course is open for them to progress at their own pace possibly without interacting with others.
Isaac Escoto
01:04:09
That’s really helpful, Kathryn. Thank you for the example!
carolyn brown
01:04:23
students want to know if you will be in person holding their hand or if they are in their own
Fatima Jinnah
01:04:33
@Carolyn - exactly.
Hilary Gomes
01:04:41
This poll should be for face to face classes that are now virtual
