Is asynchronous class something that’s part of Foothill College in general or something specific to this pandemic year?
Charles Rosas
57:29
How many students from MVHS go to foothill middle?
Nate
58:46
async online class options aren’t specific to covid times
Nate
59:08
not every online class can be taken asynchronously though
eleanorlin
59:49
@Nate…thx
Nate
59:53
np!
JL
01:01:57
How many kids per cohort?
Catalina Verdu-Cano
01:03:40
Will you be sending us a recording of this presentation?
Nate
01:03:48
general max of 30 students per class, so less than 60 per cohort
JL
01:04:24
thank you @nate
Nate
01:05:27
sure thing
Diane
01:05:39
Is it difficult to get into classes? Do we as middle college students have priority when choosing classes?
Beti Loomis
01:05:58
Do Middle College students compete for class availability with the rest of the college population?
cullen hand
01:06:27
When we reach the graduation requirements for our home school do we have to leave the Middle College program? If not how long can we stay in Middle College?
Nate
01:06:46
@Diance we have a higher priority in registration than other high school students, so comparatively i would say yes
Jane Gk
01:06:56
you get priority over duel enrollment students but are treated as a regular college student otherwise unless you have a 504 I believe
Anton Smirnov
01:07:07
^^
Lili
01:07:17
i'm from Paly, and I heard there's linear algebra + multi-variable offering that takes place on either Paly or Gunn location (rotating between the schools), instead of having students going to to Foothill college campus. Is there such a program? (maybe separate from this Middle College program)? For me, getting transportation to Foothill is a challenge.
Marian Wei Feng
01:07:42
When high school students (which grade) can apply for the middle college ?
Nate
01:07:58
@cullen hand no you usually stay at middle college until you graduate from high school
Nate
01:08:34
@Beti Loomis yes but i’ve never had problems with class availability as long as i pay attention to my date to register
Beti Loomis
01:08:56
Thank you, Nate!
Nate
01:09:14
👍
Ignacio Arenas
01:09:48
Would a student with an IEP be able to join middle college?
Nate
01:09:54
yes!
Ignacio Arenas
01:10:15
Thank you!
Nate
01:10:27
np :)
Diana Suvorova
01:10:48
To what extent do you need to know your future major if you want to take classes that will satisfy the UC credits?
Jules
01:11:12
Do you have to reside in the MVLA district while in Middle College?
Simon Pennington
01:11:39
@Lili: We do offer dual enrollment classes on PAUSD campuses, but these courses are very limited in scope and we typically only offer one class at a time in math. Taking classes on the Foothill campus gives you access to everything. From Palo Alto, bus access to Foothill is not too bad.
Nate
01:12:22
@Diana Suvorora i would say not at all. you can easily take general ed classes to satisfy freshman and sophomore UC requirements
Lili
01:13:55
Thank you Simon!
Rachel Snyder
01:13:58
Are projects group based or individual?
Nate
01:14:10
both!
aryan jain
01:14:39
how many people each year enroll in middle college?
Lesley Ruzon
01:15:09
Practical question: How do students who do not drive (yet) get too campus? Do parents carpool?
Trish Langdon
01:15:32
Usually students ride the bus
Jane Gk
01:15:35
I have only done online but there are buses
Rachel Snyder
01:15:51
Does the program help with college counseling?
Trish Langdon
01:16:01
absolutely
Beti Loomis
01:16:02
What type of bus?
Adrienne Heiskanen (she/her)
01:16:27
VTA
cullen hand
01:17:11
How many spots are currently open in middle college?
Diane
01:17:15
Are your college professors receptive to you as a younger student?
JL
01:17:15
what are the non foothill classes that MC students are required to take at their home high school?
Simon Pennington
01:17:45
Bus routes #40 and #52 both drop you off in the middle of the college.
Nate
01:18:07
@Diane i’ve found that college professors treat us all the same (if anything, a lot of them really like middle college students)
Jules
01:18:24
Are MC students able to take classes at De Anza that are not offered at Foothill, such as advanced language classes?
Diane
01:18:27
Great to hear Nate! Thanks ;-)
Nate
01:18:33
@JL none! you can meet all high school graduation requirements at middle college/foothill
Anonymous
01:18:56
How many courses are needed in order to attend MC?
Simon Pennington
01:18:58
@Diane: I taught for 23 at Foothill and I can say that some of my very best students were Middle College students.
Diane
01:19:16
Thanks Simon!
Nate
01:19:28
@Jules yes! i personally haven’t and registration is a little more complicated but you definitely can
JL
01:19:33
@Nate- thanks! At the beginning of the meeting, it sounded like they said the MC students have to take English and History at their home high school - is that not the case?
Kiki Chang
01:20:03
Are there limited options for the high school classes at Foothill? For example, what are the options for high school English, History, Science, etc? How does that compare to Gunn, Palo, MVLA etc?
Nate
01:20:30
@JL nope! our middle college classes are our english and history classes (as well as econ/phil/lit etc) :)
JL
01:20:47
@nate - thanks for the clarification!
Nate
01:20:53
sure!
Jane Gk
01:21:43
if I could go next I have to get going
Nate
01:23:59
@Kiki Chang there aren’t any high school classes at foothill, but in terms of core classes at foothill that satisfy high school requirements, there are a really wide variety of kinds of classes to take
Vera
01:24:00
Thank you for these thoughts @Leela
JL
01:26:49
historically, are there students who end up dropping out of MC and returning to traditional high school? If so, what were the reasons?
Marian Wei Feng
01:28:32
At which grade, students are eligible to apply for MC?
Muhammad Ali
01:28:37
can a child go back to HS if Middle College is not right for him / her?
Trish Langdon
01:28:44
11th and 12th grade
Muhammad Ali
01:29:40
in the middle of 11th grade
Leela Salim
01:29:58
@JL if there were it is due to just the search for what program works for them
JL
01:30:20
thank you, @Leela!
Beti Loomis
01:31:48
Trish Langdon you are awesome!
Jules
01:32:08
Do you have to reside in the MVLA district while in Middle College?
Trish Langdon
01:32:29
PAUSD and MVLA Districts
Marian Wei Feng
01:33:27
Thank you. Students apply in March of the 10th grade, and start at 11th grade, correct?
Marian Wei Feng
01:35:48
What's the admission rate?
Subodh Bapat
01:36:58
How does the funding work? Do students have to pay tuition to attend Middle College, or does the student's home high school transfer the student's funding from the school district to Foothill College?
Trish Langdon
01:37:31
Middle College just like the public school
Trish Langdon
01:37:45
Funded by both districts and Foothill
Subodh Bapat
01:38:12
Thanks Trish.
Diana Suvorova
01:38:15
In what month do foothill classes usually end at the end of the year?
JL
01:38:34
foothill classes usually startsept and end in june
Trish Langdon
01:38:41
We follow the Foothill Schedule and end at the end of June.

Rohan Shukla
01:45:47
Given that the students have said that around 10 people are there per class, do MIDDLECOLLEGE students attend foothill college with other MIDDLECOLLEGE members or other real foothill college students
Alicia Triana
01:47:09
@Rohan, that student was referring to the small groups we have split our cohorts into to have more manageable and engaging Zoom classes. Typically, their Middle College English and History classes are with their high school Middle College peers, but in the Foothill classes, the size varies and they take those with the general college population.
Diane
01:47:49
I missed the first few minutes. Do you recommend taking 2 college courses in addition to core classes/community per quarter?
Kiera
01:48:40
Is there a chance Middle college will be in person even if it turns out that most of the foothill classes are virtual?
Geetha Shankar
01:48:46
Is there info anywhere of where Middle College students have attended college in the last 3-4 years?
Abdullah N
01:48:50
Do students normally have enough credits for 2 remaining years at college/university or do they have to 4 years? Also what kinds of electives would the middle college path offer and would it share any electives with their primary high school?
Rohan Shukla
01:48:56
Thank you @Alicia Triana
Catalina Verdu-Cano
01:49:06
Do you get 2 different transcripts?
Marciano Gutierrez
01:50:06
The foothill courses will be added to their high school transcripts. They can also order their Foothill college transcript if needed.
Catalina Verdu-Cano
01:50:47
Thank you @Marciano Gutierrez
JL
01:51:09
Do MC students apply to university as freshman, or as transfer students?
Grace’s iPad
01:52:17
How is this different from standard dual enrollment programs?
Catalina Verdu-Cano
01:52:38
Do middle college students take AP classes?
Abdullah N
01:55:31
Does Middle College offer classes similar to ones offered at your regular high school, and if it does not offer a certain class that your main high school does, can u take a class with the main high school in MC?
cullen hand
01:56:51
Is it ok if a student might not want to go to college immediately after high school-middle college?
Catalina Verdu-Cano
01:57:11
Are the tutoring services free?
Carol
01:57:18
On the topic of disabilities/IEP and tutoring, how about support for "executive functioning" issues
Simon Pennington
01:57:22
Everything is free!!!
JuFen
01:57:30
thank you all!
Simon Pennington
01:58:14
Many students take a gap year and work or travel.
Grace
01:58:40
How is this different from standard dual enrollment programs?

01:58:59
awesome thank you Alicia!
Catalina Verdu-Cano
01:59:26
How much help is there for SAT prep and college selection?
Marie-Louise Catsalis (she/her)
01:59:55
Do you keep your guidance counselor from the home school, or is there a different guidance counsellor at MC?
Vera
02:00:04
What are other resources where we can find other alternative resources?
Rachel Snyder
02:00:18
What is the project work like at Middle College?
Catalina Verdu-Cano
02:01:03
How is GPA calculated?
Kayla Fong
02:01:31
Can you do both Freestyle (am) and Foothill Middle College (pm)?
JL
02:01:32
like @Grace, I’m also curious how MC is different from dual enrollment?
Jeremy
02:03:53
For the high school classes offered by the Middle College program, how is the GPA calculated in home high school?
Marian Wei Feng
02:05:39
How many students graduated from the MC last year? Can you share where they go after the MC?
Monica Garcia
02:07:04
Will you need teacher recommendations this year?
Michael Olsen
02:07:37
Would it be possible to transfer to College Now, in case that would be a better fit ? - A little uncertain at the moment. What is your experience.
Leeza Pushnof
02:07:43
if we do need the recommendations how many do we need?
Grace
02:08:35
I will be applying to MC as a Senior, do I keep my home school counselor or do I assign a new counsellor at MC?
JL
02:09:48
@Alicia, Michael, Trish, and Marciano, @annett, @Josh and Simon, Thank you so much for this informative session and for supporting this option in our community.
OLGA LIBOVA
02:10:06
you require a recommendation from a counsellor. I feel that this year especially they do not know much about students.
Simon Pennington
02:11:41
@Michael: College Now is not as structured as Middle College. The students are taking just Foothill classes and are not part of a cohort. College Now is supported by a dedicated MVLA counselor, but you are essentially a Foothill student as part of College Now. It really depends on what works best for you.
Abdullah N
02:12:03
thank you!
Subodh Bapat
02:12:05
Can students drop out of Middle College to return to their home high school, if it is not a fit for them? If so what are the permissible timelines for doing so? In a typical year, how many students drop out to return to their home high school?
Geetha Shankar
02:12:06
So what student is the best fit for MC?
Marie-Louise Catsalis (she/her)
02:12:20
^^^
Zack
02:14:06
If a student is very quiet during class, what do you write on letter of recommendation about quietness?
Geetha Shankar
02:16:35
Thank you @Michael Wilson
Grace
02:17:31
Will the 'Recording' be available after the meeting?
Grace’s iPad
02:18:12
Are students who transfer to college upon graduation on an equal standing with their peers who have gone through the standard high school/college process?
Marie-Louise Catsalis (she/her)
02:20:52
If time management is an issue for the student, would they NOT be a good candidate for MC?
Grace’s iPad
02:21:05
What about from an academic standpoint? Academically, are students who transfer to college as a sophomore/junior at the same level as fellow sophomores/juniors who went through the standard process?
Josh Pelletier (Foothill College)
02:21:40
This is exactly why I chose to teach and work at a community college
Marie-Louise Catsalis (she/her)
02:22:19
Thank you!!!!!!
Simon Pennington
02:22:39
@Grace: YES!!! Community College students who transfer to a four-year school typically perform at a higher level than those who started at a four-year school.
Fiorela Garcia Rojas
02:23:14
